John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

Giving up your life to save the ones you care about is a sacrifice that we often see in stories, because it truly is, as the Word says, the greatest act of love. It was this kind of love that Christ expressed to save all of humanity, sacrificing himself so that our sins would be washed away. Jesus commands us to love one another as He loved us; how much are we willing to sacrifice?

1 Corinthians 15:33

Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”

It’s been said that you are who you spend time with, and this hasn’t changed since the beginning. Each of us can be influenced by the people we value, for better or for worse. Jesus encouraged us to associate with the lowly and be good to sinners, but our friends should be chosen wisely. Our company shouldn’t come at the cost of what’s right.

Proverbs 27:17

Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.

The impact that one person can have on our character and our lives is tremendous. While some people along the line may have torn us down, there’s great potential for a trusted friend to build you up. Like iron sharpening iron, we should always be sharpening one another, keeping each other accountable, responsible, and encouraged.

Proverbs 13:20

Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.

The Bible encourages us to choose friends who won’t just walk with us, but who will help us live our best lives for Christ. The words of a wise friend might not always be easy to hear, but they’re grounded in truth and in love.

Ephesians 4:9-10

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!

Good friends can be incredibly valuable and can help us get back on our feet when we fall short. We see best friends like David and Jonathan helping each other all throughout the Bible; even Jesus was visited by angels during his time alone in the wilderness. Two are better than one, and God’s Word encourages us not to face life alone.

2 Corinthians 13:11

Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.

In the Apostle Paul’s final message to the church of Corinth, he urges them to live in peace with one another as one mind and body. He reminds them that the God of love and peace will always be with them; a reminder that we need even today. With God among us and Christ in our hearts, a life of peace and unity with one another should come naturally.
