Ephesians 2:10
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

Have you ever completed something that you were proud of? Imagine the pride of an author who has just finished a masterpiece that he wants the whole world to read. Your Father in heaven feels the same pride toward you, His creation. Flawed and sinful though you may be, God loves you completely, and as He was making you, He prepared you to serve Him. You are his workmanship, created and renewed in Christ for good works; so what will you do for Him today?

Jeremiah 1:5
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

You have been intimately known and loved by God since before you were born. Before you were formed in your mother’s womb, before you were even thought of, the Lord knew your name. Not only that, but he knew the story of your life, even the parts that you haven’t experienced yet. The Lord has a plan for each of us; plans that, even if you don’t get to see or understand them in this lifetime, are so infinitely beautiful from the perspective of eternity. Don’t be afraid of the life God has in store for you; you have been appointed to do great things for Him, if you will just follow where He leads.

Psalm 19:14
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”

In what you say and how you act, you are setting an example of what you believe in for the rest of the world. To the unbeliever, then, you represent the gospel. If you have been born again and made into a new creation by the blood of Christ, let the words you speak reflect that. In Psalms, David prays that not only his speech, but also his heart would be honorable, and acceptable in the sight of God. In a time in history where our words can reach more people than ever before, let this also be your prayer.

Ephesians 4:29
“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”

Hopefully more than one person in your life has encouraged you and said something that built you up. Sadly, on the contrary, you’ve probably been discouraged once or twice as well. If this is true, then you know the influence that the words of others can have on your confidence and character. God tells us in His word to let nothing corrupting come from our mouths, but instead to be an encouragement to the people around us. Discouragement erodes relationships and brings others down, but by building others up, you give grace to those who hear you.

1 Peter 3:10
“Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.”

When we lie, we do so because we believe that telling the truth would create a difficult scenario for us. But we are assured in the Word that if you want to avoid trouble and see good days, it’s important that you remain honest. People interpret much about you and your character through what you say. When you create a web of lies, you’re creating a false identity as well. How can you expect to be trusted if your words can’t be trusted? When you speak, speak truthfully, and enjoy the blessings of a life lived honestly.

Proverbs 25:15
“With patience a ruler may be persuaded, and a soft tongue will break a bone.”

Careless words are often destructive to both hearer and speaker, but words that are carefully chosen can hold incredible weight. In the Bible and throughout history, wise words have persuaded kings, deescalated conflicts, and transformed the hearts of people. The crafty tongue of a serpent is what led to God’s perfect creation being corrupted, but because of Jesus, your words can save souls for Christ. Pray that the Holy Spirit would guide your speech, and be ready to share the message of hope at every opportunity. Through your words God can plant a seed in someone’s heart, and by His power they can be saved for eternity.
