Proverbs 16:9
The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.

Throughout the bible we are shown that the Lord’s ways are above our ways, and His thoughts above our thoughts. From a human perspective you make your decisions in the present, building plans for the future that you hope to achieve. You only see the here and now, but God see’s everything. He knows what tomorrow brings, and He has incorporated each and every moment of it into His will. You might make plans for your life and take bold strides forward, but the Lord establishes your steps, and only through Him will you find success.

Psalm 139:16
Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

God knew all the days you would live before you were even born! He wrote each one of them for you before you had even breathed your first breath. Since the beginning, the Creator has been telling a grand story through the universe He has made. You and I are a part of that story, and if you let God be the author of your life, there’s no telling what kind of story He could weave together. One day, when this life is over and we are with Him in heaven, we’ll be able to look back on the good times, the bad times, and everything in between, and see how God was able to use all of it for His purpose.

Romans 8:25
But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

Everything you and I do in life is for the hope of building a good future. We make choices, take risks, and hope that the outcome of those risks is a good one. If only you could see into the future and know what your life holds… but then, you would miss out on being able to trust God with your life, and experience firsthand the twists, turns and blessings He gives. The Father is writing a story with your life, and not knowing how the story ends means our faith, trust and patience is put to the test. So be hopeful for what you can’t see yet, and in whatever season of life you find yourself in, await God’s purpose with patience.

Psalm 37:7
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!

In the book of Psalms, King David laments many times about how his wicked enemies seem to prosper, but he reminds himself and us that evil wasn’t made to last. In one way or another, the Lord punishes those who do evil, and blesses those who love Him and keep His commandments. So be still before the Lord, waiting patiently for Him to arrange all the pieces of your life that you can’t see yet. In the end those who don’t fear God will come to ruin, but no matter what happens, those whose salvation is found in Jesus will inherit an eternal reward in Heaven, and nothing can compare to that.

James 1:19
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.

It isn’t wrong to be angry, but anger can often lead to wrath and sin. It causes you to lash out at people, doing and saying things you’ll regret, and seldom does that ever solve anything. Not only does it damage relationships, acting in anger puts you in danger of undermining the “good fruit” God has produced in your life. Do not let the sun go down on your anger, but instead remember to be patient in all things, treating everyone with the love and understanding that Jesus would have shown them.

Philippians 4:6
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Patience is the opposite of worry. It’s remaining calm and trusting that God has a purpose and a plan behind whatever trial or frustration you’re facing. In times that test your patience, be thankful to God for what you do have, and for the grace that He has shown you. Keep praying, making your requests known to God, because there’s no request that goes unheard, and no prayer that He can’t answer. To be patient in a season doesn’t mean hiding your burden of stress, but rather, giving it to the Lord.
