Proverbs 31:28
Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.

When women read this passage of Proverbs, it can feel like reading about the perfect women. She does all the right things, says all the best words, and seems to have an endless supply of energy and ability to provide for her family. But that’s not why her children rise and call her blessed. They do it because she wipes away tears, picks up the broken pieces, and helps put things back together again. And when it happens another time, she’ll be there to do it all over again. She’s not perfect, she’s simply faithful.

Ephesians 6:2-3
“Honor your father and mother, that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”

Honoring your parents can be an easy task that you want to fulfill, or it can be a difficult one. Especially if they haven’t fulfilled the role of ‘parent’ very well. And yet, God asks you to set aside your feelings and choose to show them some recognition for their effort. Honoring might look like sharing a kind word, extending forgiveness, or it might look like you are sharing the truth of the gospel with them. Ultimately, when you choose to love your parents like Jesus, you honor them in the best way possible.

Proverbs 1:8
Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching.

Solomon, the man of wisdom, encourages you to learn from your parents. But not all parents are created equal. Even David, his own dad, wasn’t a perfect example and made quite a few mistakes. But Solomon’s message wasn’t for you to live a perfect life, it was so you wouldn’t have to suffer consequences that you could bypass by trusting the warnings of those who’ve gone before you. And maybe it’s their mistakes that change the course of your life.

Acts 16:25
About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.

In the midst of suffering and persecution, what will you be found doing? Paul and Silas were found praising God and singing hymns to Him. This was after they were arrested, beaten and then put in prison. Instead of feeling fear and doubt creep in, they felt praise and thanksgiving well up in their hearts. So much so, they had a worship service in the prison at midnight. It’s a great reminder, that even in the most difficult of situations, your worship to God can bring comfort, strength, and even influence, not just you, but to others as well.

2 Samuel 22:29-31
For you are my lamp, O Lord, and my God lightens my darkness. For by You I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; He is a shield for all those who take refuge in Him.

David penned these words as a song of praise to the Lord when He delivered him from the hand of his enemy, Saul. For years, David experienced darkness through difficult times of persecution, loneliness, false accusation, and suffering. Yet, the Lord sustained him, delivered him, and inevitably gave him an eternal place in the genealogy of Christ. On this National Day of Prayer, follow David’s example and cry out to the Lord in prayer.

James 1:6
But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.

If you’ve ever been in the ocean, then you know what it’s like to be tossed by the waves. And James says when you doubt in prayer, it’s just like being pushed around by the ocean. But God doesn’t want you to get tossed around when you lift up your heart to Him, He wants you to trust Him. And your faith in Him as your Rock will keep you standing firm against even the biggest waves.

Matthew 6:6
But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

During the time Jesus walked the earth, the Pharisees enjoyed public accolades. They liked being noticed by everyone, especially when they prayed in the public square. But God doesn’t want us to do things in the public eye in order to be seen by men. He’d rather you find a secluded place, even as small as a coat closet to sit alone in and pray. And when you do, not only will God see you, but He will reward you!

Jeremiah 29:12
Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you.

They didn’t need it…yet. Jeremiah shared this verse with the Israelites before they were taken into Babylon as punishment for turning away from God. But their future offspring needed to know that when the time of punishment was over, God would hear them if they cried to Him. And it’s the same for you. Your journey may stretch out for a season as well, but when you call out to God, He will certainly hear your prayers.

Isaiah 65:17
For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind.

Do you remember when Jesus resurrected from the dead, He still had scars on His hands, His feet and His side? In fact, He showed those scars to some of the disciples because they needed help believing it really was Him. But Jesus didn’t want that to be the focus of His return. His focus was on the future of Jerusalem, Judea and the ends of the world. And that’s what it will be like in heaven. We will still know the things of the past, but they won’t steal the focus. The focus will be the new heavens and the new earth.

Psalm 24:1
The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein.

There’s nothing like getting your first car. You meticulously looked for it, you saved for it and then you paid for it, so naturally it means a lot more to you than any other car. And that’s exactly why the world is so important to God. He meticulously created everything in it: from the animals on land to the fishes in the seas, from the highest mountain peaks to lowest of heartbeats. So, naturally the earth means more to Him than any other planet in the universe. And so do you!

Colossians 1:16-17
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

In the beginning, Jesus spoke into existence everything that is seen, like animals and bugs, and everything that is unseen like viruses and atoms. And now, after all these years, even though nothing new is created, He is the One who holds it all together. If He didn’t, our entire universe would disintegrate into chaos. But just like you can trust Him to hold the cosmos together, you can trust Him to hold your life together as well. After all, it’s all for Him anyway.

Psalm 104:5
He set the earth on its foundations, so that it should never be moved.

Perfect tension. It’s what keeps gravity from the sun pulling one way and the rotation of the planets pulling the other way. That tension keeps every celestial body in its place within the entire solar system. In fact, if we were just a smidgen closer or farther from the sun, the results for life on our planet would change drastically. And since God is the one that set it all in motion, He’s the one that will not allow it to be moved. Which means, if God can work out the very complex details of the universe, He can be trusted with the rudimentary details of your day-to-day life.
