Ariel has always been one of my favorite Disney princesses because of her ambition. She had dreams that were literally out of her world and decided to go and get them! But she learned pretty quickly that doing this on her own could have major consequences. I love how Ursula is written as this obviously evil, but convincingly down-to-earth, confidante for Ariel. “We’re gals with ambition!” She meets Ariel where she is and gives her the “simple” answer: just become human yourself! Isn’t this just like the enemy? Here’s the simple solution: “do it yourself! You don’t need anyone else!” This is the basic premise of every lie that the enemy tells us humans every day. From the first lie on this earth that the serpent told Eve: you won’t die when you eat the fruit, you’ll become knowledgeable like God himself, convincing her that she didn’t need God anyway. Now Ariel’s story could have ended with her failing and reaping the consequences of her seemingly simple solution… but it doesn’t. SPOILERS! Her own father loves her so much that he takes her place and suffers the consequences of her actions. Just like us! God loves US so much that He doesn’t let us suffer for the ultimate consequence of our sins but
took our place on the cross.
God has created us with ambition and drive and He wants us to use it! And He’s in our corner. He doesn’t want us to try to do it alone. How comforting that we have a loving father who wants to help us in everything.
